My skin is angry.
I’m not sure what I did to make it so upset with me, but in the last few years I’ve had red, blotchy, sensitive skin, which is at its worst when I get out of the shower in the morning.
It could be that my skin is changing in adulthood, or it might have something to do with the fact that I moved from New England to Los Angeles to Chicago over the course of five years, and the different climates are wreaking havoc on my skin.
So needless to say, I’ve been an avid consumer of skincare products made for sensitive skin recently. I especially love when I find a line of products that are designed to work in tandem; a cleanser, a moisturizer, and a serum. And, let’s be honest, as I approach 30 I need to start incorporating an eye cream into the mix too!
I recently tried the Calm skincare line from Arbonne, which includes a daily cleanser, facial serum, daily moisturizer, and eye gel.
The products include ingredients such as Japanese green tea, aloe vera, cucumber, licorice, mallow, chamomile and sea mayweed, and I love that they’re fragrance free.
I heard an excellent piece of advice years ago from a facialist and it informs most of my product-buying decisions: the better something smells, the worse it is for your skin (and hair)!
I used the four products over the course of two days and was very happy with the results! Here’s what I thought more specifically about each product.
Gentle Daily Cleanser
Apply a small amount to moist skin and massage gently in circular motion. Rinse with warm water.
The cleanser was probably my favorite product in the entire Calm line. It’s a sulfate-free gel that goes on smoothly and while it doesn’t foam up a ton, you can really feel it working. One of the worst feelings with a cleanser is when your face literally feels squeaky-clean after use, because that usually means your skin is getting stripped and will be over-dried.
I applied this cleanser with my hands instead of my Clarisonic because I wasn’t sure how my skin would react to it. If I were to use my Clarisonic with it in the future, I would definitely use my Luxe Cashmere brush head because I’ve found it’s excellent for sensitive, highly irritable skin.
When I rinsed this off, my skin felt smooth and clean (but not squeaky-clean!) and I was really excited to see when I stepped out of the shower that while I had a little pinkness in my cheeks, my face was less red and hot than it normally is after cleansing.
Soothing Facial Serum
Apply evenly over face and neck. Use in the morning and evening after cleansing.
I’m super picky about serums; some make my combination-oily skin feel too greasy, while some just feel like water.
I was surprised at the translucent yellow color of this serum and happy that the consistency was runnier; extremely rich serums tend to make me break out.
It felt super soothing and lightweight to apply, and my skin was definitely happy for the hydration. It did feel a little sticky after applying—I’ve really yet to find a serum that doesn’t!—but after I gave it a few minutes to sink into my skin, it left the surface soft and smooth.
Gentle Daily Moisturizer
I may be late to the eye cream party, but I’ve been using moisturizer daily since I was 13 years old and I’d like to think it’s part of the reason why, at 27 years old, I continue to get carded at restaurants.
Many people with combination or straight-up oily skin fear moisturizing because they think it will cause their skin to become greasy.
But actually, under-moisturized skin can end up producing more oil to overcompensate! I now moisturize morning and night and if I forget (slash am too lazy) to do so before I go to bed I definitely notice it right away the next morning.
This moisturizer is perfect, and believe me—I’ve tried dozens, from Murad and Origins to Olay and Neutrogena. It was creamy but not too heavy and my skin immediately looked dewy and glowing. Done!
Soothing Eye Gel
Gently apply under each eye from inner corner to outer corner in the morning and evening.
Ahh, the eye gel. I was really excited to try this one because, as I mentioned, it’s an area that’s been lacking in my routine and I need to find a good product that will prevent me from getting crow’s feet!
This gel was a deeper yellow color than the serum and a little tackier. I don’t think that I would apply it in the morning, because I don’t have a ton of time between when I apply my facial products and when I have to apply my makeup and I’m not sure I’d want to apply my concealer directly afterward.
But, this felt indulgent to apply at night after I washed my face and I love the thought that my under-eye area is improving itself while I’m sleeping! My sample didn’t have this feature, but the full-size has a roller-ball applicator, and I love those for the under-eye area. They’re so refreshing!
I’m really excited that I got to try the Calm line and I’ll definitely be ordering full-size versions of these products.
I think the biggest thing my skin has been crying out for is consistency; I’m such a product junkie that I’m continually trying new sensitive lines to see if my skin will respond better to them.
But it would be nice to use a complete line of products every morning and night and track the improvements over time!
